Rowner batted first and although Finnigan reached 14, Sam Pearce (2-10) and Ben Jones (2-25) kept the brakes on from the start. Once the first wicket fell at 20, Rowner collapsed to 26-4 before rallying to 52-5 thanks to 30 from Jeffcoat.
Matt Colban (3-28) bowled Jeffcoat and that was largely the end of Rowner's resistance. Tom Jones took 3-11 as Rowner were bowled out for 77. Aaron Dean took a good catch and Ben Thomas a sharp stumping.
Purbrook's reply started confidently thanks to Sam Pearce (21) and Tom Jones (21). It then started to get VERY dark. Ben Thomas struck 7 before being bowled in the gloom and Peter Mill and James Harrison both came and went under cover of darkness.
The match started to get very tight and neither side wanted to call it off as it wasn't clear who was ahead on run rate. The tension was heightened by the fact that the batsmen couldn't see the ball in the dark and had no idea whether there were any fielders in the shadows. In fact, if Rowner had brought on half a dozen extra fielders, nobody would have known.
Luckily Matt Colban (13) and Carl Marsh (2) proved up to the task and Purbrook reached 81 for 6 to win by 4 wickets.
It just goes to show that in Purbrook we not only play good cricket, but we eat a lot of carrots! (And not just the rabbits.)
