Local derby is an entertaining nail-biter

Purbrook v Waterlooville 10 June 2001

Those spectators that remember last years match here; have another game to remember. Waterlooville bat first and the opening pair push the score along with the aid of a very fast out field. Bennett takes the first wicket, the batsman deceived by a beautiful reverse swing that took middle wicket, 28 for 1. Next man in Clarke has a good game retiring on 28 in the 7th over. Second wicket came after the batsman hit a high ball from a top edge; Colban never took his eye off the ball to make a safe catch, 36 for 2. Waterlooville steady their nerve to play some wonderful cricket and take the score to 60 off 10 overs, Hudson retires on 25. Another catch in the field late in the innings and Waterlooville are 100 for 3 wickets. Waterlooville finish their innings on 111 for 3.

Purbrook know they have to push hard to win this game. Opener Colban bowled in the 4th going for the big shot after scoring 11. Finding his form last week Thomas was on a roll, he retires then gets to come back in later in the innings. Middleton is run out after a misunderstanding with Thomas, but Purbrook are just off the over rate of Waterlooville. The captain 4th man Jones picked up from where he left off last week, knocking shots to the boundary to level the run rate. A short ball and a top edge back to the bowler and Jones was off to the pavilion having added 24 to the score. Haran is bowled first ball, Purbrook look in trouble. Next man Bennett thrashes shots to the boundary making a very quick 15 before being bowled. Budd has a disappointing time at the crease before being bowled by a ball cutting back sharply. Harrison adds some runs with the use of the boundary this lad hates running. Going for another boundary shot he is clean bowled. Carter and Marsh get their names on the score sheet before they lose their wickets through some fine bowling. Purbrook require 11 runs from the last 10 balls, Spectators on the edge of their seats as last year. Last man Higginbottom is partnered with the returning Thomas. Good running from the last pair and Purbrook want 2 from the last ball to draw, they manage to run just 1. Purbrook 110 for 9
