Under strength Purbrook take the game to Hayling

Purbrook V Hayling

Home game 27th May 2001

Purbrook lost the toss, with Hayling opting to bat. Hayling openers struggled to settle against the bowling of Bennett and Middleton. By the fourth over Hayling were 23 for the loss of one wicket. Drizzly rain then made the outfield slippery and with some misfielding due to these conditions, the Hayling batsman growing in confidence started to build a good innings. Two good catch opportunities went to ground to further bolster the confidence of the Hayling side. Hayling finished their innings on 110 for 2.

In the changing room Purbrook captain Ben Thomas, pointed out to his side to use the conditions to their advantage as they went into bat. The captain opened, but the second ball of his innings saw Thomas play on, to give Hayling their first wicket for no runs. At this early stage Hayling looked and sounded confident, up to the crease came number three batsmen Bennett. Bennett and number two batsman Middleton started to show their strength with both lads having to retire by the fifth over. Good running between the wickets form the remaining Purbrook team, saw the score push up with a good steady run rate. The young tail end batsmen showed good skill and a good awareness of the Hayling field positions. With only his second start for the under 13 colts a personal best of 16 runs by Marsh, helped Purbrook cruise to a fine win in the 17th over with a loss of 8 wickets.
