Purbrook U16s v Gosport 4 November 2001

Where were the cavalry?

The biggest talking point in this match was "How many players will Purbrook have?". For most of Sunday they had five as the manager frantically rang round the prospective candidates leaving messages. This rose briefly to eight and then sunk back to five as the plague struck one team member.

Sam Spencer was the first player to be contacted who actually agreed to play. Carl Marsh and James Harrison then answered messages and said they would love to play. Unfortunately they had to be stood down. Sam was then struck down with some lergy which left him to ill to play or to mention to anybody that he wasn't going to turn up.

Purbrook suspected germ warfare by the opposition, but a plan to carpet-bomb Gosport had to be abandoned when the pilot didn't turn up.

The match finally got under-way with Purbrook batting first. They started brightly with 10 off the first over. but it was too good to last. Tom Jones (8) and Matt Colban (10) were run out and Peter Middleton was caught off Wright for a duck. Sean Figgins reached 24 before committing hari-kari. Some hard-hitting from Ben Jones (14) allowed Purbrook to reach 95 all out.

Purbrook didn't bowl straight enough to give themselves much of a chance when Gosport replied. Ben Jones (2-35-2), Sean Figgins (3-34-1) and Tom Jones (1.5-28-0) were all below par. Stares (30) and Wright (26) took advantage of this as Gosport cruised to 98 for 3 in 7 overs.

The highlights of the Purbrook fielding were three good catches by Tom Jones, Matt Colban and Sean Figgins respectively. (Especially the first two.)

By the end, all the Purbrook players were just as sick as Sam.

Purbrook: Sean Figgins, Ben Jones, Tom Jones, Peter Middleton, Matt Colban
